About the Academy

Imagine...

a place where you share your creative endeavours with like-minded people, where your mind and your body is stretched and your imagination is sparked.

Where you have the opportunity to work with and learn from the best practitioners, and academics in your chosen art form, where the emphasis is on vocational training as well as academic study.

Imagine a place where intensive training, tuition and rehearsals culminate in public performances, concerts and exhibitions throughout the year.

The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), Edith Cowan University was established in 1980 to provide performing arts tuition comparable to the highest calibre of national and international training benchmarks to be able to meet industry needs around the globe.

Originally an initiative of the State Government the Academy receives funding from both the State and Commonwealth governments. Unique by virtue of its national and international reputation the over riding objective of WAAPA is to nurture and develop the talent of a select group of emerging artists to standards of excellence.

Academic teaching appointments are made not only on the basis of qualifications, but also on recent professional experience, as well as industry profile and reputation. Each year WAAPA also invites many renowned industry professionals to Perth as artists in residence to work with students on productions and performances.

Currently, WAAPA teaches Acting, Music Theatre, Directing, Dance, Jazz and Contemporary Music, Classical Music, Arts Management, Production, Design, and Broadcasting.

The employment record of the Academy graduates in extremely competitive fields including film, theatre, radio, music and television, continues to be outstanding and well attuned to the needs of the industry.

THE WAAPA PERFORMANCE SEASON

Another primary purpose of the Academy is to 'stage' concerts and performances, laying the path for the smoothest transition possible from student to professional.

Every year WAAPA stages hundreds of concerts and performances across the genres of Jazz, Contemporary and Classical Music, Dance, Acting and Music Theatre - more productions and more diversity than any other production venue or arts training institution in Australia.

Importantly such volume and diversity of performances provides our Arts Management, Production and Design students the edge over other institutions and gives our Broadcasting students lots to talk about.
