WAAPA’s Bachelor of Music (Classical Performance) is a rigorous, four-year degree qualification that offers expert training for classical instrumental and voice students. Students enjoy a range of performance opportunities, plus all the training they need to create careers as professional musicians.
Students receive individual lessons, specialised masterclasses and workshops, and classes in music history, aural skills, harmony, pedagogy, career skills and performance psychology. Students also take to the stage to perform as soloists and in a large range of ensembles.
WAAPA also offers a one-year Diploma of Music that is a great place to begin learning musicianship and technique.
In addition to specialised instrumental classes, students study a range of classical repertoire and contemporary performance practices. Pianists study solo repertoire, accompaniment, historically-informed performance practices, and vocal coaching. Performance opportunities include specialist ensembles for strings, wind, brass, percussion, piano, saxophone and guitar; chamber music ensembles; and large-scale orchestras for symphony concerts, opera, and music theatre productions.
In training for a career as an opera singer and recitalist, students learn not only how to sing, but also how to perform. In addition to core music units, Classical Voice students have specialist classes to study acting, languages and movement skills. Students perform in ensembles, fully-staged operas, oratorios, choruses and concerts, with repertoire ranging from the Baroque through to 21st century music. There are opportunities to work with a full orchestra and to build a folio of pieces for recitals.
