How To Stage a Massive Broadway Musical in Perth
Tuesday, 10 April 2012
A satire of big business and all it holds sacred, How to Succeed in Business… follows the rise of J. Pierrepont Finch, who uses a ‘self help’ book to climb the corporate ladder. Finch advances from lowly window washer to high-powered executive, tackling familiar territory along the way, like the aggressively compliant “company man,” the boss’s whiny nephew, the office man-eater, backstabbing co-workers, caffeine addiction, and true love.
Performed by the entire 2nd and 3rd year cohort of WAAPA’s renowned Musical Theatre program, How to Succeed… is directed by Jason Langley (Breast Wishes, Elegies, Bat Boy, Once On This Island, Ragtime, A Chorus Line). The large orchestra will be directed by David King, the spectacular dance numbers are choreographed by Jenny Lynnd, lighting design is courtesy of multi-award winner Trudy Dalgleish (White Devil, Eureka, Hairspray, The Boy From Oz) and set design is by Steve Nolan (Anything Goes, Crazy For You).
“I am thrilled to be working on this fantastic musical,” says director Jason Langley. “It is extraordinarily funny. With its retro 60s setting, the themes, characters and songs more than resonate in a post GFC world, as can be seen from the phenomenal success of the current Broadway revival.”
Of course, this production will be as extravagant as WA’s theatre-going public have come to expect from the WAAPA mid-year musical.
“We didn’t think we could top the scale of last year’s mid-year musical, Crazy For You, but once again WAAPA’s dedicated Production & Design students and staff have raised the bar. This really is a million dollar production for the price of a $50 or $60 ticket.”
With all the hilarity of TV's The Office, all the sexy, 60s, über cool of Mad Men, How To Succeed… will have you splitting your sides with laughter at the embarrassing recognition of the corporate antics in this boisterously fun, groundbreaking, Pulitzer Prize winning musical!
