WAAPA Honours graduate, sessional staff member, bassist, and recently commenced PhD student Nick Abbey was awarded the WA Music Industry Jazz Song of the Year at the WAM awards night on March 21, 2015.

The WA Music Awards (known affectionately as the WAMis) play a vital role in recognising the achievements and output of the WA music and industry talent. With both public and industry-voted categories, the awards cover specific music genres, individual crafts and industry awards.

Abbey's winning composition Charon was performed by TRISK, an ensemble featuring fellow WAAPA grads and staff members Daniel Susnjar (drums) and Chris Foster (piano). Charon is Nick’s third consecutive work to win the award, after Maelstrom in 2012 and Avina in 2013. Receipt of this award entitles Nick to a cash prize and a full day of recording at Poons Head Studio, which will be used to create an EP of previously unrecorded original music.

Visit the TRISK website for all performance dates and information about their two upcoming CD releases. For a full list of the 2014 WAMi nominees and winners, please visit the WAM website.
