Spice up your winter with a spot of seduction and intrigue! In June, WAAPA's 3rd Year Acting students will perform Christopher Hampton’s award-winning play, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, a sharply drawn tale of sexual power and desire.
This year marks the 30th anniversary since Les Liaisons Dangereuses made its debut on London’s West End. Staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company, it won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play.
Hampton adapted it from the 1782 novel of the same title by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, which depicts the decadence of the French aristocracy shortly before the French Revolution.
“It is the story of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, two rivals and ex-lovers who use seduction as a weapon to humiliate and degrade others, all the while enjoying their cruel games and boasting about their manipulative talents,” says director Crispin Taylor. “However, while these merciless aristocrats toy with others’ hearts and reputations, it is their own which prove more fragile than they supposed.”
The timelessness of the play’s exploration of human behaviour has seen it made into a number of films and television series, including the Academy Award-winning film Dangerous Liaisons starring Glenn Close and John Malkovich, and the modern remake Cruel Intentions with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Philippe.
Les Liaisons Dangereuses will be performed by WAAPA’s 3rd Year Acting students under the direction of Crispin Taylor in WAAPA’s Roundhouse Theatre from Friday, 10 June to Thursday, 16 June, with a 2.00pm matinee performance on Saturday, 11 June.
A post-show discussion with the cast and creatives will be held on Tuesday, 14 June, providing a wonderful opportunity for audience members to ask questions about the production.
After its Perth season, WAAPA’s production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses will tour to Hong Kong to be performed at the acclaimed Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.
