Do you have a teenager in the family who loves acting? Or is a budding music theatre star? In the upcoming July school holidays, talented high school students are invited to explore their creativity in short courses at the acclaimed Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, enjoying access to its expert staff and outstanding facilities.

WAAPA’s mid-year Explore Short Courses in acting, music theatre and singing invite young people interested in performing to explore their craft further by extending their skills, becoming more confident and learning how to audition successfully.

Acting Up! is a week-long school holiday program from Monday, 11 to Friday, 15 July that offers Year 10, 11 and 12 students specialised tuition in acting, improvisation, movement and voice. Taught by WAAPA’s Acting staff, the participants create self-devised pieces that are performed at the conclusion of the course to an audience of family and friends. An information session run by WAAPA staff answers questions about WAAPA’s courses and the realities of pursuing a career as an actor.

Aspiring young actors also have the opportunity to attend our one day Acting Audition Masterclass, which unpacks the audition process from choice of audition piece to final presentation.

For those wanting a longer course, the Acting Foundation Course runs on Saturday mornings for 10 weeks from June through August. This preparatory program offers the foundation skills and performance techniques of acting, with a screen component covering audition techniques for film and television work.

For young performers wishing to enhance their music theatre skills, WAAPA offers the Music Theatre Mid-Year Workshop. Suitable for teenagers 14 years and older, this week-long holiday program runs from Monday, 4 to Friday, 8 July. It offers expert tuition by WAAPA's Music Theatre staff in ensemble singing, song and dance, jazz, acting and improvisation techniques. The workshop culminates in a musical performance for family and friends.

WAAPA also offers the Music Theatre Audition Masterclass, a one day workshop that provides techniques to deal with the most challenging musical audition, from cattle-call to call back. This masterclass and the Acting Audition Masterclass are particularly relevant to prospective WAAPA students.

Singers wishing to extend their vocal skills are encouraged to enrol in the Contemporary Vocal Performance Workshop, a 2-hour evening class once a week for 6 weeks. Over the course of these weekly sessions, students will develop performance techniques in contemporary vocal styles including pop, jazz, rock and R&B.

There are limited places available for WAAPA’s Explore Short Courses, so book now to avoid disappointment.
