Movie music magic in ‘Soundtracks’

Classic songs such as ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ from The Wizard of Oz, ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ from Pinocchio and the title song from Singing in the Rain have all become mainstays in popular culture.
These songs are just part of a hit parade of memorable movie music that WAAPA’s Jazz and Contemporary Music students are taking to the stage of the Subiaco Arts Centre for Soundtracks on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 September at 7.30pm.

Percussion pupils share the spotlight with Tetrafide

Over the last year, a groundbreaking program run by the renowned ensemble Tetrafide Percussion has offered a group of percussion students from WA high schools the opportunity to learn from the best.
With State Government funding, these specially chosen young musicians participated in the Tetrafide Percussion Advanced Performance Program, a series of intensive percussion workshops, master-classes and rehearsals. The secondary students were chosen through a rigorous audition process from private and government schools throughout the metropolitan area and from regional schools as far away as Esperance.

D.A.S.H. at PICA: a showcase of new choreographic talent

D.A.S.H., a program of new pieces choreographed and performed by WAAPA’s dance students, will open at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) on Tuesday 26 August and run until Saturday 30 August.

Slava and Leonard Grigoryan perform at WAAPA

Acclaimed Australian guitarists Slava and Leonard Grigoryan are respected worldwide for their effortless virtuosity and brilliant musicianship.
Both successful solo artists in their own right, the brothers began performing together regularly in 1999.
In 2001, Leonard was the only guest artist on Slava’s ARIA award winning album, Sonatas and Fantasies. The following year they released their first duo album Play, which was also nominated for an ARIA. They have now released their third duo recording, Impressions, and have performed together throughout the world, as well as touring Australia many times.
Now, for one concert only, Slava and Leonard Grigoryan will perform at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts on August 22 at 7.30pm.

The 2,500-year-old play that just keeps on giving

Lysistrata, by the great Greek playwright Aristophanes, reads like a ribald romp. After all, it’s the comical tale of a group of tenacious women who, led by the feisty Lysistrata, decide to withhold sex from their husbands to secure peace in their region.
But theatre director Chris Bendall, currently directing Lysistrata at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, sees it differently.

Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has triumphantly taken its place on the music theatre and opera stages of the world since its premiere in 1979. Most recently, it lit up movie screens around the world in Tim Burton’s film version starring Johnny Depp.

Baton of Faith Court Orchestra passes to internationally renowned musician

Peter Tanfield, a distinguished virtuoso violinist, conductor and pedagogue, has taken up the baton as conductor of the Faith Court Orchestra for 2008.
Tanfield, who was appointed Coordinator for Classical Strings at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts earlier this year, will conduct the Faith Court Orchestra in an evening of grand theatrical works on Wednesday 21 May at 7.30pm in WAAPA’s Music Auditorium.

A triple bill of choreographic gems in ‘Oscillate’

Sundays @ 3 - Germany 1941: Music for the End of Time

German composer Messiaen was interned as a prisoner-of-war in Stalag VIIIA, Silesia. The staff of WAAPA’s music department will perform Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time – a piece he wrote to overcome the hunger, squalor and bitter cold of his experience. Alongside Messiaen will be Henryk Górecki’s Lerchenmusik (Music of the Larks), which leaves the ear to consider austere, architectural magnificence and tender intimacy.

UNO – Louise Conroy Solo

Unity (1918)

The mysterious and deadly plague known as the Spanish Flu causes panic and paranoia among the townsfolk, who eventually turn on one another in an attempt to find a scapegoat. Directed by George Whaley, former head of acting at the National Institute for the Dramatic Arts, this production examines the impact of war and natural disaster on society - a situation as relevant today as in 1918.

Boy Overboard under the stars

In October, Lewis returns to the stage at WAAPA to direct the 2nd Year Music Theatre students in Stephen Sondheim’s musical Assassins.

Popular music has always had its divas – women who have made a strong impact on the musical landscape through their talents and personalities. These jazz and popular divas have taken great songs and made them their own.
Stars such as Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday have been followed through the decades by Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, K.D. Lang and Diana Krall.
Now, for three concerts only, WAAPA’s Jazz and Contemporary music students will pay tribute to these legendary women of song in Divas of Jazz and Pop, from Tuesday 19th of September.

John Chen Piano Recital

Piano Wizardry!
In 2004, 18 year old John Chen became the youngest ever winner of the prestigious Sydney International Piano Competition. John has given many solo recitals and performed concertos with major orchestras throughout New Zealand and Australia. He will soon record the complete piano solo works of Dutilleux for Naxos, and a selection of Debussy and Ravel for ABC Classics. John recently toured with Chamber Music New Zealand and has given performances with New Zealand's leading chamber ensemble, the New Zealand String Quartet.
The program will include works by Mozart, Schumann and Ravel.
