Jane Austen's Drawing Room

Jane Austen's Drawing Room

Music Direction by: Stewart Smith and Jonathan Paget
Performed by: Stewart Smith (Clementi Square Piano), Jonathan Paget (René Lacote guitar) and WAAPA Music students

In the fashionable Georgian age of Jane Austen’s romance novels, square pianos were the mainstay of domestic music-making. The square piano, which features prominently in the Stewart Symonds Collection, was an English invention that allowed compact affordable pianos to fill the drawing rooms of thousands of homes. English music-making of this era includes a surprisingly rich repertoire of songs for piano and guitar.
