The Threepenny Opera

Written by: Bertolt Brecht
Music by: Kurt Weill
Directed by: Craig Ilott
Music Direction by: Kohan van Sambeeck
Performed by: 3rd Year Acting students

Step into WAAPA’s newest venue for a classic of 20th century music theatre, Brecht’s ‘opera for beggars’. As London scrubs up for the coronation, the thieves are on the make, the whores are on the pull and the police are cutting deals. Mr and Mrs Peachum are looking forward to a bumper day in the beggary business, but Mack the Knife is back in town and their daughter didn’t come home last night. Weill’s acid harmonies and Brecht’s biting texts infuse the music of 1920s Berlin dance band and cabaret with a shot of razor-sharp politics.
