Micheál is a Senior Lecturer at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.


Micheál graduated from University College Cork, Ireland with a Bachelor of Music (Hons) and Higher Diploma in Education (Hons) in 1986. He pursued his postgraduate studies at the Zoltán Kodály Pedagogical Institute of Music in Hungary, where he studied under world renowned conductor and pedagogue, Péter Erdei. He graduated in 1988 with the Advanced Diploma of the Kodály Institute, the Institute s highest award.

Since 1990 Micheál has held lecturing positions at the Canberra School of Music, the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where he is currently Senior Lecturer in Aural Training, Harmony, and Choral Conducing. His choirs have featured on ABC’s Classic FM.

Micheál is the director of ‘Eneskis’, a vocal ensemble which has gained a reputation as one of the finest choirs in Australia. Micheál is also founding director of the Cottage Music Institute, a school which for 20 years has provided specialist musicianship and choral training for children aged 5-16.

In 2009, Micheál was awarded the Edith Cowan University Vice-Chancellor’s award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2010, he received a national teaching award, a 'Citation for Excellence in Teaching', from the Australian Learning & Teaching Council for University Teaching.

Micheál conducts regular workshop for teachers, students, and community organisations in Australia and overseas – many of his workshops have featured at national and international conferences and festivals. He was invited to work as a consultant to the Singapore Ministry of Education in the development of their ‘creativity through music education’ project.

Micheál is currently involved as the on-screen classroom music and choir mentor for a documentary TV series that will show the transformative effect that music can have on children in schools.
