Micheál is Senior Lecturer in Music, specialising in Aural Training, Music Theory, and Choral Conducting at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

Background

Micheál graduated from UCC, Ireland with a B.Mus. (Hons) and H.Dip.Ed. He pursued his postgraduate studies at the Zoltán Kodály Pedagogical Institute of Music in Hungary, where he studied under world-renowned conductor and pedagogue, Péter Erdei. He graduated with the Advanced Diploma of the Kodály Institute, the Institute’s highest award.

Since 1990 Micheál has held lecturing positions at the Canberra School of Music (ANU), the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where he is currently Senior Lecturer in Aural Training, Music Theory, and Choral Conducing. His choirs have featured regularly on ABC’s Classic FM.

Micheál is the director of ‘Eneksis’, a vocal ensemble which has gained a reputation as one of the finest choirs in Australia. He is founding director of the Cottage Music Institute, a school which for 20 years has provided specialist musicianship and choral training for children aged 5-16.

In 2009, Micheál was awarded the ECU Vice-Chancellor’s award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2010, he received a national teaching award - a 'Citation for Excellence in Teaching' from the ALTC for University Teaching.

Micheál conducts workshop for teachers in Australia and overseas, and many of these workshops have featured at national and international conferences.

He was invited as a consultant to the Singapore Ministry of Education for their ‘creativity through music education’ project.

In 2018-19 Micheál was on-screen classroom music and choir mentor for the ABC TV documentary series, ‘Don’t Stop the Music’, a series that set out to show the transformative effect that music can have on children in schools.
