Aural Training - Contemporary

Our Single Study program is a great way to study a single class or two offered at WAAPA without committing to one of our full-time programs.

With this unit you will be introduced to fundamental aural skills and their application within contemporary music. Basic skills will be developed through an examination of the fundamental musical elements on intervals, scales, chords, rhythm, chord progressions and melody. Your vocal skills will also  be developed to support and apply the underpinning theoretical constructs, with singing and dictation being the primary tools for internalising each area of study.

On completion, all participants should be able to:

  • implement music fundamentals;
  • perform basic melodic and rhythmic dictations;
  • perform basic sight singing exercises;
  • recognise the presence and application of studied material in recorded examples; and
  • vocalise and identify selected basic intervals, scales, chords, cadences and chord progressions.
