Aural Training - Jazz

Our Single Study program is a great way to study a single class or two offered at WAAPA without committing to one of our full-time programs.

This Aural Training unit introduces you to the fundamental principles and techniques of aural and their application within a jazz context. Basic skills will be developed through an examination of the fundamental musical elements of intervals, scales, chords, rhythm, chord progressions and melody. Your vocal skills will be developed to support and apply the underpinning theoretical constructs, with singing and dictation being the primary tools for internalising each area of study.

Prepare to expand and improve on your aural talents as you examine and contextualise commonalities and specialties of a variety of different musical conventions.

On completion, all participants should be able to:

  • begin to apply studied concepts and techniques to core tunes;
  • begin to perform basic melodic and rhythmic dictations;
  • begin to perform basic sight singing exercises;
  • begin to recognise the presence and application of studied material in recorded examples;
  • recognise aural fundamentals; and
  • understand how to vocalize and identify selected basic intervals, scales, chords, cadences and chord progressions.
