Performance Making

Go behind-the-scenes, plus see and hear more from our students on our ECU YouTube channel.

Performance Making major provides an immersive, three-year journey combining performance skills (voice, movement, acting) with creative skills (devising, directing and writing) and work on productions (self-devised, site-specific, and text-based). Theory and context units support the practical training. This major suits both school-leavers and mature applicants.

The major attracts those interested in more than one area of performance who might be writer-performers or director-performers. There is a particular focus on the twentieth century developments in practice, philosophy and theory of performance, and how those developments inform the current landscape of experimental performance.

The course features opportunities such as:

  • annual site specific performance made in response to a unique location
  • annual study tour to Intercultural Theatre Institute, for training in traditional Asian theatre;
  • a partner training agreement with Spare Parts Puppet Theatre in Fremantle;
  • articulation agreement with Calle Flygare, Stockholm, whose graduates enter year 2 of the program.
