Australia’s top brass quintet performs at WAAPA

Thursday, 03 October 2019

Australia’s most outstanding brass players dazzle in a concert of showcase music for brass quintet at WAAPA.

Thanks to the generous support of the Minderoo Foundation, WAAPA is delighted to host the renowned Australian Brass Quintet (ABQ) for a concert on Thursday, 10 October at 7.30pm in the Richard Gill Auditorium.

The program includes Joan Tower’s extraordinary Copperwave and a set of exquisite Spanish Dances arranged by ABQ trombonist Scott Kinmont, plus other favourites from the brass quintet repertoire.

ABQ is made up of five of Australia’s finest brass players, who perform together with exceptional artistry.

Led by David Elton, former Head of Brass at WAAPA and now Principal Trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra, the ABQ is a who’s who of top Australian brass players – starring Elton, Brent Grapes (Principal Trumpet, West Australian Symphony Orchestra and WAAPA’s current Head of Brass), Ben Jacks (Principal Horn, Sydney Symphony Orchestra), Scott Kinmont (Associate Principal Trombone, Sydney Symphony Orchestra) and Shannon Pittaway (Principal Brass Trombone, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra).

The ABQ is dedicated to presenting creative, engaging programs that showcase established masterpieces, innovative new works for the modern brass quintet, and collaborations with local and international artists. This unique Australian ensemble is sought after for commissions, festivals, recordings, collaborations and residencies.

Passionate about the future of brass music in Australia, the ABQ champions new works, presents education programs and residencies, and mentors young professional musicians.

“Performing with ABQ is an incredible experience, the artistry that these musicians bring to every performance is a joy to behold,” says Brent Grapes.

Now Perth audiences can experience the joy of watching five of Australia’s best brass players performing together in a concert of consummate musicianship – don’t miss it!

The Australian Brass Quintet’s visit to WAAPA is generously supported by the Minderoo Foundation.
