LINK Dance Company is the graduate dance company, unique in Australia, based at the internationally renowned Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) at Edith Cowan University.
Dancers who have completed a three year tertiary dance course can apply for admission to LINK’s pre-professional program. It offers a select group of graduate dancers a unique transition year between training and ‘the profession’ whilst still supported by a conservatory environment.
Originally established in 2002 by Chrissie Parrott as an innovative research project within WAAPA’s Dance Department, LINK evolved into an ongoing resident company with a commitment to the creation of new works; and national and international touring. Since its inception the company has been guided by Artistic Directors Chrissie Parrott, Olivia Millard and Justin Rutzou.
Current Artistic Director, Michael Whaites (2006-present), leads the company which has access to the superb physical and faculty resources at WAAPA, including rehearsal space, theatres, designers, set and costume construction and production staff. LINK Dance Company closely replicates the range of activities experienced in a small contemporary company. Dancers attend daily company class, rehearsals, fulfil production responsibilities and negotiate funding issues to facilitate the annual European tour.
Through LINK Dance Company, newly graduated dancers gain professional experience whilst additionally furthering their individual research interests. New works are commissioned for LINK Dance Company by highly regarded Australian and international choreographers, with some works also re-staged by seminal artists. Each year a new company is formed which performs and tours locally, interstate and overseas.
In addition to experiencing the “simulated workplace”, company members explore a research topic of their choice leading to a thesis. LINK dancers therefore gain both a transitional professional year and a further academic qualification. Previous LINK dancers have undertaken research on topics as varied as dance film-making, choreography, performance management and injury prevention.
In addition to Honours, the Master of Arts (Performing Arts) course at WAAPA also has the possibility to connect to the LINK program as a Masters by Research project in conjunction with the LINK Dance Company. Find out more about the postgraduate Dance courses on offer.
