Andries is a Lecturer in Classical Dance at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

Background

Andries Weidemann is a South African born dancer, educator and choreographer. He has been teaching into the classical and contemporary courses at WAAPA since 2009. Andries regularly guest teaches for The West Australian Ballet, The Royal Academy of Dance, The Cecchetti Society and is an advisory consultant to the AICD, WA. In 2018/19, he served on the project working group for the PwC Skills for Australia Culture and Related Industries project.

In 2013, Andries was the recipient of the ECU Vice Chancellor’s Staff Award for Engagement, recognising excellence in enriching the WAAPA Dance course. He is currently part of a team developing research into health in the performing arts and has published research on pirouettes, leg alignment and safe dance practice. Andries also supervises Honours students and is completing a Master of Education (Research) at ECU, focusing on dance education.

As a choreographer, Andries has created, staged or choreographed for several major and independent companies in WA. Previous engagements include choreography/direction for WAAPA’s Dance and Classical Voice departments, WA Ballet, WA Opera, Freeze Frame Opera, Lark Chamber Opera and choreography for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 2011.
