Live for one night only, the internationally acclaimed Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) comes together with Albany’s vibrant music community to perform its annual contemporary music showcase.

ACCI Radio Active is set to lift the roof off the Albany Entertainment Centre on Friday 26 August at 7.30pm in a spectacularly produced concert featuring a huge cast of talented young musicians and singers from WAAPA, Albany Senior High School and Great Southern Grammar.

Expect a feast for the ears and music for all ages with a diverse repertoire that covers all musical bases from pop to rock, R ‘n’ B to soul, a capella, gospel and funk classics – something for everyone!

Thanks to the generous support of the Albany Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) and the City of Albany, students from WAAPA’s Contemporary Music department are presenting a week of music workshops with Albany SHS and Great Southern Grammar, culminating in this unique public performance.

Lisa Smith, CEO of ACCI, said: “The Chamber is pleased to again be sponsoring ACCI Radio Active and provide access to the arts in this way in Albany; and with WAAPA and Hilton Graden Inn jointly hosting August’s Business After Hours, it is a great opportunity to showcase artistic talent.”

This amazing group of talented Contemporary Music students will be directed by highly acclaimed WAAPA staff members: singer/recording artist Matt Allen (Top 10 in the Australian Songwriting Awards); award-winning Australian session drummer Ric Eastman (Human Nature, WASO, Thelma Houston, Lee Konitz, Ernie Watts and the Jazz Australia Big Band); and in-demand jazz vocalist Allira Wilson (2014 Bell Award for Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album).

Rehearsing and performing alongside the WAAPA students, the young local music students get to enjoy expert mentoring from the Perth visitors. In the past, this has opened the door to further studies for some of these young musicians, as they get a taste of what they can expect from tertiary training beyond high school.

“Performing in Radio Active was one of the most memorable moments of my life,” recalls vocalist Sophie Scott who, after graduating from Great Southern Grammar, successfully auditioned for WAAPA’s Contemporary Music course. “Playing alongside the WAAPA students showed me that I too had a chance to do what they do, and I found my foot in the door of the musical world.”

Now in her final year of a Bachelor of Music degree, Sophie is delighted to be returning to her home town as one of the WAAPA students involved in this year’s concert.

“I’m so glad I was given the opportunity to show my musical self back then and expand it in my studies,” she says. “Having the opportunity to work with the WAAPA students also created some long-term friendships, and I was fortunate to be able to rekindle these friendships as I transitioned to WAAPA.”

Don’t miss this concert of the best local young talent performing with WAAPA’s upcoming stars. Tickets are limited so book now to avoid disappointment.
