Privacy statement

Edith Cowan University recognises and respects the privacy of students, staff and other members of the community. ECU is committed to the responsible management of the personal information collected, in a manner that protects the privacy of individuals whilst meeting the University's Privacy Policy and various legislative obligations.

In delivering teaching, learning, research and recruitment, the University collects, uses and discloses personal information relating to students, staff, and others. ECU will treat personal and sensitive information collected during these functions with the highest standards of confidentiality and privacy.

The University’s privacy management approach is guided by the Privacy & Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (WA) and the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

ECU's Privacy Policy and related procedures cover the following:

  • Access and correction of personal information
  • Access to personal information for research purposes
  • Contact details for ECU’s privacy officers

Privacy Impact Assessments

To support the responsible handling of personal information, the University has established a process to ensure privacy risks are consistently identified and managed whenever new or significant changed practices are introduced.

The University will undertake Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) for all high privacy impact initiatives. The PIA Procedure outlines how this obligation is met.

For further information or if you have any concerns regarding the handling of your personal information or seek access to that information, you may contact the Privacy Officer, Privacy@ECU.

  • If you believe there has been a data breach involving personal information, please lodge this using Information breach notification form.
  • If you have reason to believe there has been a cybersecurity incident, please report it via the ECU IT Service Desk.
  • If you are seeking information on how make a Freedom of Information Act 1992 (WA) application, please refer to the Freedom of Information page.
  • If you believe there is a breach of the ECU Privacy Policy by the University, its member of staff or another person.
  • If you are a student and wish to request access to, or to correct personal information held by ECU about you AND you were unable to do this as via Student Hub or other administration services.
  • If you are a staff member and wish to request access to, or correct, personal information held by ECU about you AND were unable to via Staff Kiosk.

ECU may, from time to time, update its Privacy Policy, Collection Statements and various information handling tools to ensure they remain appropriate to changing laws, technology and the University environment.
