WAAPA is offering an exciting new opportunity for aspiring musicians in the Great Southern region – from 2023 onwards, WAAPA’s expert Music staff will be delivering its Diploma of Music course in Albany.

For a decade, WAAPA’s Contemporary Music department has been engaging with the remarkable talent of the Great Southern through its highly popular Radio Active program. This intensive week of music training brings together local high school music students with WAAPA staff and students for a special, one-off concert.

Now, in addition to this highly popular annual event, WAAPA’s one-year Diploma of Music is being offered to allow students to remain in Albany while progressing their musical studies. Expert WAAPA staff will travel to Albany each week to run ensembles and take classes.

“Helping to develop the depth of talent in the region is what excites us the most about this new program,” says Dr Jamie Oehlers, WAAPA’s Associate Dean of Music.

“Transitioning from high school to WAAPA’s Bachelor of Music course involves relocating to Perth and coping with university life, which can be a big adjustment for regional students. So we see this Diploma program as a logical step towards realising dreams in the music industry and getting to know the WAAPA staff without having to leave home.”

The CUA50820 - Diploma of Music focusses on performance outcomes as students develop strong practical skills on their chosen instrument or voice. This nationally recognised qualification prepares students for a wide range of careers in the music industry, giving them the knowledge and skills to become a performer, composer or sound engineer.

While students may choose to go into the industry on completion, the Diploma is designed to progress students to a Bachelor of Music entry level to further enhance their skills and artistry.

Dr Oehlers explains that this is the first music course that WAAPA has run in a remote location.

“It is the incredible relationship that WAAPA has with the local community that has enabled this … there’s nowhere else we’d rather start!”

Applications close on 28 October and auditions will be held in Albany on the 19 November. So what are you waiting for? Apply now.
