She’s been described as “a poet of the guitar” whose performances are “magnificent”, “soal soaring” and “spellbinding”. Karin Schaupp is one of the world’s most celebrated classical guitarists, renowned for her expressive artistry and luminous tone.
On Thursday 13 August at 7pm, Perth audiences get a rare opportunity to experience up close the sublime mastery of Karin Schaupp when she performs a solo concert at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in its magnificent McCusker Recital Hall at the new ECU City Campus.
The Brisbane-based guitarist presents The Feeling of Home, a program spanning centuries and styles: from timeless works by Bach, Schubert and Tárrega to brilliant Australian works by Joe Chindamo, Richard Charlton, and brand new pieces written especially for Schaupp by Ross Edwards, Phil Moran and Tara Lynam.
Born in Germany to a musical family, Schaupp’s guitar training began at the age of five when her mother, who taught guitar at the Conservatorium of Wiesbaden, became her teacher. Schaupp first performed in public the following year. When she was eight, she emigrated to Australia with her parents. By the time she was in her teens, Schaupp was winning prestigious international music prizes in Italy and Spain.
Acclaimed for her commanding stage presence, Schaupp has performed across Europe, Asia, the Americas and Australia as a soloist and chamber musician. Her extensive, ARIA award-winning recordings for Warner Music International and ABC Classics have earned her international recognition.
A recipient of the Freedman Fellowship and an Australia Council Music Fellowship, Schaupp is also Head of Classical Guitar at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University.
