WAAPA’s Production Design courses prepare students for industry employment through theoretical learning experiences paired with opportunities for the practical application of skills. Working with industry directors and choreographers on WAAPA performances, the course provides skills development in live production environments, preparing graduates for transition into design-related careers within the entertainment industry.

Production Design students undertake classes in design studio scenery and costume, technical drafting, CAD, art finishing, drawing, model making, scenic painting, wardrobe technology, props construction, and history of theatre. To further extend their design skills and knowledge, students receive specialist classes delivered in their principal studio area and are offered more challenging set and costume design roles in WAAPA’s live productions for theatre, opera, music theatre and dance performance programs.

Commencing in 2026, students who have successfully completed the CUA60220 – Advanced Diploma of Live Production and Management Services can articulate into the two-year, full-time Bachelor of Performing Arts degree program. Students in the Bachelor of Performing Arts program continue their chosen specialisms, focussing on extending CV’s and Portfolios.

The two majors offered will be Production and Design and Stage and Production Management, which includes Set, Costume, Lighting and Sound. The great value of this extension to training is it gives students more time to mature as a practitioner, understand comprehensively the qualities of collaboration, and is an internationally recognised qualification, opening doors to opportunities abroad.
