Karen is a Lecturer in Lighting at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).

Background

Karen is a lighting designer, stage manager and technician. She has designed lighting for companies such as Black Swan State Theatre Company (Animal Farm, Unsung Heroes), The Last Great Hunt (Perpetual Wake, The Talk, The Advisors), Yirra Yaakin (Vignette Series, Cracked, Mother’s Tongue, Windmill Baby), Spare Parts Puppet Theatre (The Little PrinceHachikoTales from Outer SuburbiaMiss Lily’s Fabulous Feather Boa), Lost & Found (Actéon), Barking Gecko (Aesop and His Fables), and a host of independent theatre companies including Red Ryder and The Duck House. Several of her lighting designs have been part of Blue Room Theatre Award winning productions, including Grounded (Best Production and Members’ Choice 2017), Motortown (Best Production 2008), and Quest: A Tell-Tale of the Heart (Best Production Team 2008).

Karen has also enjoyed an ongoing relationship with Curtin University, where she has previously worked as the Hayman Theatre Coordinator, and taught Technical Theatre Fundamentals.

Karen has toured extensively around Australia and internationally, as a tour/stage manager, working in venues ranging from regional town halls and primary schools to major performing arts centres.
