The Beau Monde

Music Director: Stewart Smith
Performed by: Classical Piano students and staff

No fashionable Georgian front room was without a harpsichord or, from the 1790s, a piano. Playing was serious business however, for not only could a successful music master jump to the middle class, his aristocratic pupils, invariably young women – by dint of technique, talent, and taste– would often seek to position themselves as eminently more marriageable than their competition. Drawing on WAAPA’s rich collection of historical instruments, this concert explores the music of this domestic setting (think Bridgerton) and features chamber music by JC Bach, songs from the pleasure gardens, and examples of the newly emergent solo and duet repertoire from London’s finest composers.
