WAAPA’s Contemporary Music program offers two majors:
Performance - This intensive, performance-based major centres on ensemble studies, giving students the opportunity to develop advanced instrumental and performance skills on their chosen instrument (vocal, guitar, bass, keyboard or drum-set). Students receive individual lessons, attend masterclasses and are part of repertoire-intensive performing ensembles. Other classes include arranging, history, theory, rhythm, aural and improvisation. Performances are undertaken regularly throughout the course and the final year culminates in a professional recital.
Music Artist - This course focuses on creative original music, song writing, performance preparation and collaboration. Music Artists work on individual and group creativity, where performances are not limited to their primary instrument. Students develop fundamental knowledge along with an understanding of essential stylistic elements and the ability to communicate their musical ideas. Solo and collaborated original music is combined with stagecraft skills to feature in performances studies.
